SGGT is found in the liver and kidney, but the liver contributes the largest
amount of SGGT to the blood.
Although it can be used to evaluate liver disease, it is widely used in
the monitoring of alcoholic patients. Relatively small amounts of imbibed
alcohol can have significant effects on the SGGT levels.
Elevations found in:
- Occult alcholoism
- Liver disease
- Gall bladder disease
- Pancreatitis
- Barbiturate use
