Sickle Cell Screening

This screening test detects those individuals with:
  • Sickle cell disease, or
  • Sickle cell trait

Following a positive screening test, hemoglobin electrophoresis is done to determine whether the patient has the sickle cell trait (asymptomatic, with a mixture of normal hemoglobin and sickling hemoglobin), or the disease (all hemoglobin S).
