Phenazopyridine (Pyridium, Azo-Standard, Baridum)

Description:

  • Urinary tract analgesic

Indications:

  • Urinary tract pain

  • Adjunct to urinary tract antibiotics

Contraindications:

  • Patients with renal insufficiency  

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Should not be used for greater than two days

  • Will discolor urine an orange to red color, may stain undergarments

  • Should be taken after meals

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Headache

  • Rash

  • Gastrointestinal disturbance

  • Discoloration of urine

Dosage:

  • Administered orally

  • 200mg tid following meals when used in conjunction with antibacterial agent for up to 2 days
