Ticarcillin (Ticar)

Category:

  • Antibiotic

Description:

  • Penicillin

Indications:

  • Mild to moderate infections, primarily gram-negative (i.e.; genitourinary, susceptible anaerobic bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, intra-abdominal abscess, endometriosis, skin/soft tissue infections)

  • susceptible strains of P. aeruginosa, Proteus species, E. coli, Enterobacter species, Streptococcus faecelis

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Use with caution in patients with PCN or cephalosporin allergy (5-10% chance of cross-reactivity)

  • Dosage modifications are generally only required in patients with severe renal impairment

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea

  • Vaginitis

Dosage:

Administered by IV injection

  • Bacterial septicemia, resp tract infections, skin/soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, female pelvic and genital tract infections:

    • Adult and Child:

    • 200-300mg/kg/day in divided doses every 4-6 hours

  • Urinary Tract Infections (complicated)

    • Adult and Child:

    • 150-200mg/kg/day in divided doses every 4-6 hours

  • Urinary Tract Infections (uncomplicated)

    • Adult:

      • 1 gram Im or direct IV every 6 hours

    • Child (< 40kg)

      • 50-100mg/kg/day IM or direct IV in divided doses every 6 hours

    • Neonatal infections

      • give IM or in 10-20 minute IV infusions

      • dose based on age and weight
