Breast Cyst
Breast Cyst Aspiration |
Breast cysts present as smooth, non-tender masses. They will often
disappear over the course of the menstrual cycle, but those that persist will
need further evaluation. Cyst aspiration is frequently attempted, using a small needle and
syringe.
After aspiration of the cyst fluid is performed primarily to confirm
the fact of the cyst and to decompress it. Many physicians discard the
cyst fluid unless it is bloody as cyst fluid cytologic examination is
felt to be of little value.
Following decompression of the cyst, the patient returns for periodic
follow-up to look for recurrence. Recurrent cysts in the same location
are often subjected to excisional biopsy or fine needle aspiration
biopsy.
